The Dalai Lama, meaning “Ocean of Wisdom,” is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, believed to be the reincarnation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The lineage began in the 15th century with Gendun Drup (1391–1474) as the 1st Dalai Lama, while the title was formally conferred by the Mongol ruler Altan Khan to the 3rd Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso, in 1578. The current 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born in 1935 in Taktser, Tibet, and recognized at age 2 as the reincarnation. After the 1959 Tibetan uprising, he fled to India and established the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamshala, becoming a global symbol for non-violence, peace, and Tibetan autonomy, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his advocacy of peaceful solutions for the Tibetan issue.
